What makes you grow?

There are endless things that have helped me grow in my lifetime so far, but the main idea of this article is to reflect on things that may have had a major impact on who we are today. (Remember to recognize that not everyone will go through the same experiences and lifestyle changes, but it is still important to hear everyone’s story.)

I was lucky enough to get to know more about a classmate and friend over the last week, and he’s permitted me to share a little bit about how he’s grown.

Ethan Sisk is a junior business major and has been able to experience lots of life in college.“It was electrifying”, he said when I asked him how it felt to be starting college. I could agree, the feeling of being a freshman can be electrifying in some senses. Everything is new, you may not know a lot of people, and you are free from any parental guidance. Haha. The electrifying feeling of being a freshman slowly goes away, and life starts to get a bit more serious as the years go on. It could also be everything but electrifying and that’s ok, new experiences can be scary, but you will get through the nerves and find your place.

As now a junior college student, Sisk believes he has “definitely” changed since freshman year and is grateful for that. When I asked him what may have changed in his life perspective he told me that “Attempting to make decisions that would benefit me in the long term instead of short term” really started to play as a recurring thought in his head and taught him that “God is real.” I took the time to reflect on this thought to myself and thought he was right. We are now at an age where our decisions can lead to long-term effects on our lives, and the more I think about it we’ve all probably had those from time to time already. Maybe things like picking your college roommates, adopting a school pet, finding your faith, or if being a part of the party scene is for you.

Take some time to reflect on what may have had an impact on your life, and who it has made you today. Are you proud of yourself?  Or  What can help you grow for the better?

Faith has had a huge impact on Ethan’s lifestyle today, and he has accepted this new version of himself. It is amazing to see students feel comfort from not only who they are, but also from something bigger than themselves. We both agreed that college is a time of gradual change and growth and are happy to say, we both have.

Although Ethan and I have had different experiences of growth and lifestyle change, we can happily congratulate each other on doing so.

“College is the best opportunity I have received in my young life. The immense presence of

youth is next to none and “I am a college student” is a terrific conversation starter. Spring Hill as well as college in general is a great opportunity to live outside of the box and talk to a wide array of people.” Ethan shared.

I thank Ethan for sharing a part of himself, that not everyone gets to see. I hope hearing Ethan’s story has opened a new window of reflection and understanding of others for you as a reader.

A message to those starting their college journey now,

“Don’t leave any boxes unchecked and talk to everyone you can, you can always learn

something from someone.” Ethan Sisk

Tips for opening yourself up to personal growth:

  • Focus on healthy habits that make you feel good. Mentally and physically.

  • Open yourself up to change. It doesn’t always have to be scary.

  • Reward yourself for the success you have already accomplished. You’re doing great.

  • Say no to things you want you. You don’t have to go to every party or hangout.

  • Remember that you are young and gradual growth and healthy changes are supposed to happen throughout life and that everyone experiences it.

  • Practice graditude and patience.
